What Are the Types of DOT Tests? 

To receive and maintain a commercial driver’s license in Texas, you must complete drug testing at various times throughout the process of licensing, employment, and throughout the year. 

Here are the times related to DOT or CDL regulations at which you can expect to be drug tested: 

• Pre-employment – before beginning employment and/or securing your CDL. Employers must receive a negative drug test before allowing a driver with a CDL to operate their commercial vehicle or before an employee begins their safety-sensitive position. 
• Random – Employers are subject to DOT regulations which require random drug screening of a percentage of employees throughout the year. • Reasonable suspicion or cause – If one or more trained supervisors reasonably suspect that an employee is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, drivers must submit to a test. 
• Post-accident – If you are involved in an accident while driving a commercial vehicle or while performing your safety-sensitive job, you will likely be tested for drugs and/or alcohol or both following the accident. You may also be required to repeat testing in the days following the accident. 
• Return to duty – If you have tested positive, refused a test, or violated regulations, you will be required to test negative before resuming driving duties. If you tested positive, you may be subject to additional testing for the year following your return to work. 
• Bi-annual DOT physical – To maintain your CDL or regulated position, you should have a DOT-approved physical examination every two years. You may also be drug tested at the time of your physical. 

The tests themselves are quick and pain-free. Urine tests are the most common type of DOT drug test. However, you may also be subject to other testing depending on the situation. Here are a few of the types of screening tests you may encounter. 

• Urine Testing – Urine testing is the most common method used for drug screening due to its reliability and non-invasiveness. It detects recent drug use, usually within the past few days. You can expect to provide a urine sample for screening when you visit Integrity Urgent Care for your approved Texas DOT drug test.
• Blood Testing – In some instances where other health issues may be present, a blood test may be done as a part of your DOT physical or DOT drug test. This is a simple blood draw. 
• Breath Alcohol Testing – While not a drug test, breath alcohol testing is often included in drug testing procedures to identify alcohol impairment. If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident while driving a commercial vehicle, you may be asked to do a breath alcohol test. 
• Saliva Testing – Saliva tests are becoming more popular due to their ease of administration and quick results. They can detect recent drug use within hours to a couple of days.

Who Needs Texas DOT Drug Tests?

What Drugs Does DOT Test For? 

DOT drug screenings must test for five classes of drugs. These drugs include cannabis (including marijuana and hashish); PCP (phencyclidine); cocaine; opiates (including morphine, codeine, heroin, and methadone); and amphetamines and methamphetamines (including ecstasy, speed, MDMA, etc.).

If you take an opiate-based pain reliever or another prescription drug that might register on your drug test, communicate that thoroughly with the provider administering your test and on all forms you complete.
