What is a Stress Fracture? 

Stress fractures are small cracks in the bone, and are more common in weight-bearing bones than non-weight bearing. The lower legs and feet are the most common places for stress fractures to occur. This type of injury is usually caused by repetitive motions or overuse. 

Unlike a sudden break, stress fractures tend to sneak up on you slowly. You may not feel anything at first, but over time the pain becomes more persistent and harder to ignore. 

What Does Pain From a Stress Fracture Feel Like? 

Many people describe pain from a stress fracture as a dull ache that gets worse the more they use the affected area. You might feel it during a run or even after standing for long periods at a time. It can start out feeling like soreness or a pulled muscle — but unlike muscle pain, it doesn’t improve with prolonged rest, gentle massage, or stretching. 

If the discomfort becomes sharper or more focused in one spot, it’s a red flag that something more serious could be going on. Swelling, tenderness to the touch, and pain that improves with rest but returns quickly with activity are also common signs of a stress fracture. If left untreated, a stress fracture can become more serious and take longer to heal.
